Experiments With a Long-Range Planetary Rover
نویسنده
چکیده
SR2 is a solar powered autonomous planetary rover designed and built at the University of Oklahoma in collaboration with Malin Space Science Systems. This robot was created to explore the feasibility of long autonomous traverses through Marslike terrain – traverses in excess of a kilometer a day requiring no more than a single communications between the robot and mission control. This is a substantially different strategy than is planned for near-term missions or was used in Mars Pathfinder. This paper gives an overview of the mechanical and control design of the system, and the results from its first field tests in the Salton Sea Desert. Automated Surface Mission Planning Considering Terrain, Shadows, Resources and Time
This paper summarizes initial work on a planetary rover planning domain where long-distance traverse, large-scale terrain, changing line-of-sight geometry, finite resources and time strongly affect the strategy for achieving mission objectives. In this domain, because path planning, activity scheduling and resource usage are closely coupled, they must be considered simultaneously. We introduce ...
متن کامل3d Surface Mapping Using a Semi-autonomous Rover: a Planetary Analog Field Experiment
This paper describes a proposed operational architecture for a planetary worksite mapping mission concept. To map three-dimensional (3D) planetary terrain, we propose to use a rover equipped with a laser rangefinder, and employ a stop-scan-go approach with a human-inthe-loop. In the operational cycle, the rover collects locally consistent 3D range data while stationary. The range data are coupl...
متن کاملVisual teach and repeat for long-range rover autonomy
This paper describes a system built to enable long-range rover autonomy using a stereo camera as the only sensor. During a learning phase, the system builds a manifold map of overlapping submaps as it is piloted along a route. The map is then used for localization as the rover repeats the route autonomously. The use of local submaps allows the rover to faithfully repeat long routes without the ...
متن کاملVision-based Terrain Classification and Classifier Fusion for Planetary Exploration Rovers
Autonomous rover operation plays a key role in planetary exploration missions. Rover systems require more and more autonomous capabilities to improve efficiency and robustness. Rover mobility is one of the critical components that can directly affect mission success. Knowledge of the physical properties of the terrain surrounding a planetary exploration rover can be used to allow a rover system...
متن کاملParameter identification and contact modeling for planetary wheeled rovers in soft soil
A challenging topic in the field of planetary rover simulations is the modeling of the contact between the rover and its environment. Multibody simulation models are used to represent the kinematic structure of a wheeled rover, but its interface with the environment relies on sand-wheel contact dynamics. A new advanced contact model is presented and tuned according to single wheel experiments b...
